Welcome to the Future home of ageathon.com

Problem - The UK's ageing population has considerable consequences for public services. 10 million people in the UK are over 65 years old. The latest projections are for 5˝ million more elderly people in 20 years time and the number will have nearly doubled to around 19 million by 2050. Within this total, the number of very old people grows even faster. There are currently three million people aged more than 80 years and this is projected to almost double by 2030 and reach eight million by 2050. While one-in-six of the UK population is currently aged 65 and over, by 2050 one in-four will be.

Solution – As is clearly evident by the massive developer communities of Apple, Google and Facebook, innovation driven by crowdsourcing has created a new business dynamic that has taken the traditional and very limited internal research and development structure and essentially outsourced it, driving innovation at the speed of light.

Tackling a problem such as aging in the UK needs out-of-the-box thinking, needs technological solutions, needs ideas from many arenas and sectors to come together to brainstorm and build both hardware and software solutions to help face this looming issue.

And we propose to take the 'Hackathon' format – part brainstorm, part gamification, part ego, part rewards (prizes), part community, part marketing… and drive innovation in a very specific niche of the health sector that needs both technological and creative thinkers to come together to help provide some clear alternative views and solutions on the issues at hand.
